MEGMagnetoEncephaloGraphy (known as MEG) is a technique used to study brain activity. How? The signals that allow these cells to communicate with one another use electrical currents. The electrical currents also have magnetic fields associated with them and this is what is detectable using the MEG system. The measurement of these ‘neuromagnetic fields' allows us to determine both when and where the activation is occurring in the brain. |
MEG Research at the SPMMRC
The SPMMRC, in collaboration with departments of Psychology, Psychiatry, Academic Radiology, the Institute of Hearing Research and Food Science, have installed a £1.4m MEG system. This machine is installed close to the 7T MRI scanner.
The MEG group within the SPMMRC are:
Peter Morris
Johanna Zumer
Claire Stevenson
Matt Brookes
Joanne Hale
Fan Wang
Jonathan Wood
Tom White
The two systems in tandem will allow for measurement of brain activity with extremely high temporal (using MEG) and spatial (using MRI) resolution.
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) allows direct measurement of neuronal activity by sampling magnetic fields generated outside the head by neuronal currents in the brain. Detection of these tiny (~10fT) magnetic fields is made possible by the use of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUID's). MEG measurements of brain activity complement those made by BOLD fMRI, which provide an indirect means of mapping human brain function since the measured haemodynamic response is related to activation-induced increases in metabolic demand.

The magnetoencephalogram recorded from a patient suffering from a scintillating scotoma (a visual disturbance associated with migraine). Recorded data show significant increases and decreases of gamma band activity in the temporal and frontal lobes respectively. (The colour scale shows measures T-statistic)
