Fire Regulations

Fire extinguishers

Fire muster point:

CAR PARK BY MAIN ENTRANCE, WELL CLEAR OF BUILDING

These procedures should be memorised by every member of the Department since there will be no time to read them in an emergency. Evacuation of the building should be carried out as quickly as possible when the fire alarm sounds. The seven coloured Zone tokens marked A, B, C, D, E, F and G are intended to provide confirmation that a Zone has been cleared, this will usually be done by a designated fire monitor but in the absence of such a person anybody may take the Zone token to the fire muster point after checking the appropriate rooms.Note that the Token should be collected before checking the rooms.

The evacuation procedure is as follows:-

a. For all laboratories, workshops, offices etc., all windows and doors should be closed. Personnel should evacuate by the nearest available exit and assemble at the fire muster point. Disabled people should be given appropriate assistance.

b. In those instances where apparatus cannot be made safe immediately, services need not be switched off, but the personnel involved must report the situation to the emergency services upon their arrival, giving details of location.

c. Fire monitors, on hearing the alarm, should immediately go to their normal room and render it safe. After time has been allowed for the main body of people to evacuate, fire monitors should check the rooms for which they are responsible, working through the rooms systematically and closing windows and doors as each room is cleared. Locked doors should not be opened but a loud indication of an emergency given.

d. The fire monitor responsible for the 3.0 T magnet hall should operate the Emergency Run-Down Unit (ERDU) adjacent to the magnet only if it appears necessary.

e. The fire monitor responsible for the reception area should take the fire monitor reporting sign from behind the reception desk to the fire muster point. In the absence of this fire monitor any person exiting through the reception area should take the reporting sign.

f. When all rooms have been checked, fire monitors should leave the building by the nearest available exit, taking the 'Zone Checked' token to the person holding the fire monitor reporting sign at the fire muster point.
