Medical Emergency
Note that special procedures must be followed when scanning vulnerable volunteers.
When patient alarm sounds
- Stop scanner
- Assess situation (P3T: speak to volunteer though intercom)
- If assistance is required (P3T: send MR Assistant for more help if required, N3T: Press Panic Alarm)
- Remove volunteer from magnet (P3T: use normal motorised level to move bed out, N3T :pull on blanket). Assess volunteer.
- If CPR (resuscitation) is required it should be started on the bed preferably by a medic and/or two first aiders (N3T: they will need to stand on the steps or tool box). In that case, if the patient has not been transfered to the trolley, the magnet room door should be shut as the paramedics initially arrive to prevent anyone running in without removing metal.
- If medical emergency
also call Emergency Services
- Call 8888
- If no reply after 2 rings call 9-999, and then call 8888 again to ask them to meet the ambulance at the gate.
- We are building 18 on the campus map. Come in by the North Entrance (QMC roundabout). Turn right at the porter's lodge. Drive around the side of the hill. Take the second on the right, up a steep hill to a car park. Turn right along the side of the car park, along a line of tall trees. We are the yellow brick building on the far side of the car park.
Otherwise: transfer volunteer to trolley (min 4 people to do this on N3T)
- N3T: Make sure the trolley is at the same height as the bed
- N3T: Make sure the brakes are on the trolley put side safety bars up
- P3T: Two people required
- Move trolley to the control room and close magnet hall door.
- The first person to respond to the emergency will act as a guard on
the door to prevent anything magnetic being taken into the room, and to assign
tasks i.e.
- First aiders to magnet hall if required
- Two big people to help with patient lifting
- One person to run to the bottom of the hill to guide an ambulance
- One person to go to reception and ensure the door is held open and to greet the ambulance and initially warn the paramedics about magnetic materials.
